Getting Through the Struggle of Perfectionism

This morning after struggling to get out of bed due to what I’d like to think is the weather change and not age, I was listening to my instrumental track for my upcoming recording session. The past couple of days I have reflected on my voice while listening to other artists. A mistake my voice coach has repeatedly attempted to drill into my subconscious. After years of self-doubt, it may just take a few more attempts, however part of the growing process of being an artist in any media. I recognize this. But there are millions of us likely that still have those voices who are trying to compare us to others. So, I ask, “is confidence based on striving to be what we think people expect of us based on comparing our abilities to others?” Why not embrace sounding different, standing out? Isn’t the purpose to share a story? So, to truly become yourself and your voice and share the story or message as you initially were inspired to do, embrace who you are. Purge your mind of doing this to be as others and do your best to be you, because who defines perfect? When we were young our minds were wide open to all the possibilities of the future. The girl in this photo is me as a child who embraced majorettes by marching (in beat mind you) and twirling a baton in public. There were many fumbles and bouncing batons at first, but I would just pick it back up smile it off and going on twirling. I came across this photo a few weeks ago and it cracks me up but at the same time I admire this girl’s spirit.
