Over the weekend we celebrated my son’s birthday. As the years have passed, the celebration preparations have significantly changed. The once frantic everything needs to organize, party invites, and gift shopping has definitely simplified. It’s funny how we try to make everything memorable and perfect. This year my son wanted to make his own cake from scratch. Not just an ordinary simple cake, but a carrot cake with cream cheese icing. I sat out on the back deck serenading my dog, while he baked away. His efforts were rewarded with the most moist and delicious carrot cake I have ever tasted; trust me I have had a lot as it is my favorite. For so many years this would have been a rush to get everything done kind of weekend. Not that I ever regret those years but sitting back and watching him enjoy being independent and is by far the best gift he could give back. Keeping to his Leaves theme he also made Green Tea ice cream with his father. As I look back, I did encourage him to be independent in the kitchen, such as making coffee and trying out new recipes.
The hardest part was working on finishing my video for my song ‘Paintings On My Wall’, because as I am witnessing a new milestone I am sifting through past memories and milestones. Science fairs, silly moments, birthdays and other celebrations that remind me that time seems so short.
