Introspection from the Songwriter
By Jennifer Triplett
As a survivor of loss, you may always carry a new perspective on life which can be a struggle or fight (“us against the world “). “Streets lights pass me by” is a metaphor for time passing by and souls leaving, along with traveling or moving forward in life. It touches the delicate moment when sometimes the sadness felt results in reaching for a substance to ease the pain. Only those who have been there really truly understand the pain and loneliness felt. As much as you seek serenity (“sitting by the lakeside”) the pain still surfaces as life passes by and continues.
Part of my own loss is folded into these lyrics. I mention suicide in one line; however, the woman crying could be anyone and not specific to the child. I blur the lines with that message by saying “in the distance” which could be a mother far from her child or a woman suffering any loss. “Us against the world” is the idea that we should support each other in the world of day to day living.
“Us against the world” is the idea that we should support each other in the world of day to day living. There is a large number of people who have suffered loss of some type. Being empathetic is a character we should try to model and teach as we raise our children to be future members of society, so they can provide support to someone suffering loss.
So well written and wisdom at its best. Helpful in recent losses of two special companion dogs and several good friends at our retirement community.
I am thankful that song and lyrics have been helpful during this time of grief.
